Top 20 songs by The Lucksmiths

The Lucksmiths are pretty much as close to perfection as a band can get. I love them with a huge part of my heart. If anyone is thinking of getting into them, here is a list (in alphabetical order) of what I consider to be their best twenty songs, although obviously it was insanely hard to leave many others out.

The Cassingle Revival (Marty Donald, Where Were We?)
And your loyalties are divided
Between digital and vinyl
But I’m biding time
‘Til the cassingle revival
‘Cause you promised when it happens
You’ll return

The Golden Age of Aviation (Marty Donald, Staring at the Sky)
I’m going grey
But you look younger than a year ago
When you put your hair in pigtails and you put your hand in mine
We’ll be okay
I’m happy when you’re here, but oh
Your smile can seem as far away as once-upon-a-time

Goodness Gracious (Marty Donald, Where Were We?)
Don’t be hopeful on my behalf
I’d like to offer my resignation
And strangle myself with a football scarf
Or act in self-defenestration

A Great Parker (Marty Donald, Untidy Towns)
If we have a great tonight
Tomorrow could be even greater
I love it that you’re so polite
But please don’t say, “I’ll see you later.”
I’d rather see you sooner
It’s getting darker
There’s not much room
But you’re a great parker

Guess How Much I Love You (Marty Donald, A Good Kind of Nervous)
Here’s me; here’s you
Draw a line between the two
This is cartography for beginners
On a map the gap’s three fingers
But it’s more than that
It’s more than that

Harmonicas and Trams (Mark Monnone, Why That Doesn’t Surprise Me)
Little kid
Looks across the tram
Wonders what I’m writing on my hand
The words to a song
Inspired by the man, harmonicas, and trams

The Music Next Door (Marty Donald, Warmer Corners)
And then from in the wings
A neighbour sings
It might have been the music from next door
Reminded me I should have missed you more
A song I’ve heard a hundred times before

Music to Hold Hands To (Marty Donald, Why That Doesn’t Surprise Me)
If you arose by any other name
You’d smell as sweet and you’d look just the same

Pines (Marty Donald, First Frost)
Late last night
I was woken by the murmuring
Of the insects and insomniacs outside
And while you slept
I went through all my winter clothes
And quiet was the only thing I kept

Requiem for the Punters Club (Marty Donald, Spring a Leak)
On Brunswick Street the bits of broken glass
Sparkle brighter than the six or seven stars

Shine on Me (Marty Donald, What Bird is That?)
I like the way that she looks at me
I like every little bit of this
When she’s here I’m always happy
And when she’s not I’m happyish

Sunlight in a Jar (Tali White, Warmer Corners)
Complex, completely credible love
The kind that is made not handed to you from above
Is difficult to talk about and harder to write
Like the rhythms of a pulse or the contours of firelight

Synchronised Sinking (Marty Donald, Why That Doesn’t Surprise Me)
Why don’t you let go of your boy and see
You’ve lost none of your buoyancy?

T-Shirt Weather (Mark Monnone, Where Were We?)
And I say, hey, it’s a beautiful day
And I’m starting to feel a lot better
So wake up, wake up
It’s t-shirt weather

TMRW vs. Y’Day (Marty Donald, Where Were We?)
An afternoon in the country
Is all that I was after
If I can’t see you in the future
I’ll see you in the pasture

To Absent Votes (Marty Donald, Spring a Leak)
It was a disappointing sunset
Only ‘cause my hopes were much too high
We took some beers down to the landlocked jetty
And looked across the lake
Of the detritus of election night
In a town without a traffic light
Curling at the edges like a pre-loved paperback

Transpontine (Marty Donald, A Little Distraction)
Just remember when you’re wandering alongside
The river has a right side and a wrong side

Under the Rotunda (Marty Donald, A Good Kind of Nervous)
Somewhere over the railway line
There’s a light on in your lounge room
Do you remember when I found you fast asleep?
You were so slow to your feet
And I didn’t mean to yell, it’s just
That I’m a little jealous
‘Cause you can do the Rubik’s cube and I can’t

Untidy Towns (Marty Donald, Happy Secret)
And I say it like it’s unrehearsed
But I said in the bathroom first
“The boy most likely
And the girl most lovely”

The Year of Driving Languorously (Marty Donald, Why That Doesn’t Surprise Me)
We held our breath across each bridge
‘Til we were blue
But I wonder if I wished
The same as you
Like a ten year old pretending
Summer isn’t really ending

Tali White’s voice is so beautiful that sometimes I can’t even take it.

Thanks again, Stuart Murdoch, for being right

But if you’re going off to war then don’t be sore if I cheer the other team
‘Cause killing people’s not my scene
I prefer to give the inhabitants a say
Before you blow their town away
I like to watch them play
I like to marvel at the random beauty of the simple village girl
Why should she be the one that’s killed?
